Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe is a country in southern Africa. It borders South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique. The Zambezi River is the border river to Zambia. Zimbabwe is an interesting travel destination, with many sights and impressive national parks. It is a land of centuries-old cultures and with a fascinating nature!

Sights within Zimbabwe are the fabled Zimbabwe Ruins, they gave the former Rhodesia its name. A trip to Zimbabwe has much to offer, from lush green mountain regions in the Eastern Highlands, historical enigmas over the Zimbabwe Ruins at Masvingo, bizarre rock formations with the grave of Cecil Rhodes in Matopos National Park to magnificent animal reserves in the savannah.

With the national parks Hwange, Matusadona, Mana Pools, Matopos and Ghonarezhouver, Zimbabwe has wildlife-rich nature parks.

One of the largest reservoirs in the world can be found in the north of the country – Lake Kariba. It is fed by the waters of the mighty Zambezi River.

The most spectacular and famous point of the Zambezi River is probably the Victoria Falls. The locals called them “Mosi-oa-tunya” – the smoke that thunders. It was not until the middle of the last century that this great natural wonder of the earth was discovered by Dr. David Livingstone.

Country info

To enter Zimbabwe you need a passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of your trip. German citizens require a visa, which is issued on arrival and currently costs US$ 30 for a single entry. A double entry visa currently costs US$45 and is also available upon entry.

Unfortunately, there is not yet a direct flight from Germany. However, you can fly from Germany with South African Airways or Lufthansa with a stopover in Johannesburg to Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

The following flights to Zimbabwe are currently available:

  • KLM via Amsterdam, then nonstop to Harare
  • Ethiopian Airways via Addis Ababa to Harare
  • Emirates to Harare via Dubai
  • British Airways via London and Johannesburg to Harare and Victoria Falls
  • Air Namibia via Windhoek to Harare and Victoria Falls

In principle, you can travel to Zimbabwe all year round. The winter months from March to November are recommended. Please note that the nights in July / August are very cold, especially in Hwange National Park and in the Eastern Highlands! In the summer months, there can be heavy rain showers in places and it can get very hot in the west of the country and in the Zambezi Valley.

Compared to other African countries, Zimbabwe has a very good health care system. Hospitals are located in all district capitals. The costs for medical treatment must be borne directly on site. Therefore, the conclusion of a private travel health insurance is highly recommended.

Many areas of Zimbabwe are malaria areas. For further precautionary measures, it is best to contact the public health department or a tropical medicine institute. When entering the country from areas infected with yellow fever, a corresponding vaccination is mandatory.

Zimbabwe is a relatively safe destination and significantly safer than South Africa. Nevertheless, if you are a self-driver, for example, you should follow the usual rules:

  • Do not carry cameras or other valuables (jewelry, watches, smartphones) outside tourist centers.
  • Do not leave anything visible in the car when you park it.
  • Lock all doors when driving through a city.
  • Keep windows closed enough so that no one can reach into the car.

On a guided tour, you will always have a guide by your side who is knowledgeable about the area and can answer any questions you may have.
